The company got founded in 1838 by the Spaniard Juan Bastos (born 1817 at Malaga - died 1889 at Oran) at Oran (Algeria) as CIGARES ET CIGARETTES J. BASTOS. In 1914 it becomes a corporation and in 1920 the Bastos family sells all its shares to a French bank. The company had branches at Cameroon (Cameroon), Louiseville (Canada), Bastia (France), Dakar (Senegal), Switzerland and Saigon (Vietnam).

Today BASTOS is just a brand, but see as well other original JUAN BASTOS brands like Atlas and Golden Club
